Examples of work for Creative Scotland Open Fund 2023

Example 1: The Mountain And The Pendulum

This is an animated music video I created for a single called 'The Mountain and the Pendulum' taken from my 2022 album 'Under This Hunger Moon We Fell'. The concept was to create ethereal, otherworldly landscapes out of machine-like imagery. Some of the animated sequences were created in the free version of TouchDesigner, which I have proposed purchasing a full license for. I would like to incorporate this type of moving image into my live set.

Example 2: Leave Only Love Behind

This is another single taken from my latest album, called ‘Leave Only Love Behind’. This track was composed using a custom built tape looping device I created called LŪP. The images were filmed in Orkney during a residency I took part in at the Pier Arts Centre in March 2022. Again, these are the type of images that would be incorporated into an audio reactive multimedia live set using Max / MSP and TouchDesigner.

Example 3: Harmonograph Synthesiser

I wanted to show an example of my sound installation work as I’m certain learning Max / MSP will take this work to a higher level. For this installation I built a machine based on a 19th century harmonograph and connected it to a 21st century modular synthesiser. A harmonograph is an old scientific device that uses pendulums to create illustrations of harmonic motion, called lissajous figures. On this harmonograph each pendulum is connected to a sensor which triggers different elements of the synthesiser so that every time the machine makes a drawing, it also creates an accompanying soundscape. There's also a contact mic on the drawing board to pick up the sound of the pen, which is fed into the soundscape. I was interested in the dichotomy of using an archaic device that was invented at a time when we barely understood how to usefully apply electricity, to a modern device that makes sound using only electricity.
